The story

The persimmon you can eat firm.

Fuyu is non-astringent, so the squat orange fruit is sweet while still crisp, like a honeyed apple. It ripens in fall and hangs on after the leaves drop, which looks deliberate. Self-fruitful; one tree is enough.

Light

Full sun for the best fruit and fall color.

Water

Weekly the first two summers. Established trees want a deep soak in long dry spells; drought stress makes fruit drop early.

Planting

Spring or fall in well-drained soil. Persimmons have a long taproot; plant young and don't move it.

Fruit, fall color and winter ornament from a tree that needs little help.
