Japanese Persimmon

Light

Full sun for the best fruit and fall color.

Water

Weekly the first two summers. Established trees want a deep soak in long dry spells; drought stress makes fruit drop early.

Planting and soil

Spring or fall in well-drained soil. Persimmons have a long taproot; plant young and don't move it.

Feeding

Light. A balanced fertilizer in early spring. Overfeeding causes fruit drop.

Pruning

Prune in late winter for shape and to remove crossing branches. Fruit forms on new growth.

Through the year

Leaves out in spring, small flowers in late spring, orange fruit and fall color in October and November. Bare branches with fruit into early winter.

If something's off

Young trees sometimes drop fruit; it usually settles down by year four. Otherwise few problems.

Why we stock it: Fruit, fall color and winter ornament from a tree that needs little help.
