The story
Big flowers in the cold months.
Rose-pink flowers up to five inches across, with a thick cluster of gold stamens, from winter into spring. It's an old Southern favorite that grows into a broad evergreen 10 to 12 feet tall. The leaves are thick, glossy and dark all year.
Light
Part shade or bright filtered light. Morning sun is fine; hot afternoon sun burns leaves.
Water
Evenly moist the first year; deep watering in dry spells after.
Planting
Fall or spring, slightly high, in acidic soil with organic matter. Mulch well.
The biggest flowers in the winter garden, on a shrub that anchors a shady corner.
