Yarrow

Light

Full sun, six hours or more. In shade it gets leggy and falls over.

Water

Water weekly the first summer. After that it handles drought on its own.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall with the crown level with the soil. Average or poor soil is fine as long as it drains. Skip the compost.

Feeding

None. Feeding it is how you get floppy stems.

Pruning

Cut spent flower stems to the base for a second round. If it flops in midsummer, cut the whole plant back to the fresh leaves at the bottom.

Through the year

Ferny foliage in spring. Blooms June into September. A low green mat holds through winter in milder zones.

If something's off

Flopping means too much water, food or shade. Divide every three or four years when the center thins out. Yarrow is toxic to dogs and cats if chewed.

The meadow weed, promoted.

Common yarrow grows wild across most of North America, which tells you how much help it needs. Ferny, aromatic leaves and flat white flower heads from summer into early fall, usually covered in small bees.

Why we stock it: It fills the dry, sunny spots where fussier plants give up.
