Light

Full sun outdoors, bright window in winter.

Water

Steady moisture in the growing season. Less in winter, never soggy.

Planting and soil

Spring, in sandy, well-drained, slightly acidic soil or a coarse potting mix.

Feeding

Balanced fertilizer every six to eight weeks in warm weather.

Pruning

Shape young trees. Hand-pollinate flowers with a small brush for better fruit set.

Through the year

Grows and flowers in warm months. Fruit takes several months to ripen. Rest indoors in winter outside the tropics.

If something's off

Poor fruit set is common; hand-pollinate. Cold damage starts in the 30s. Seeds are toxic.

A strange fruit, worth it.

Large green fruit covered in soft spines, with creamy white flesh that tastes somewhere between pineapple, strawberry and citrus. The tree has glossy dark leaves and greenish-yellow flowers.

Why we stock it: The fruit you otherwise only find frozen, grown on your patio.
