Light

Full sun, at least 6 hours. More sun, more flowers, less disease.

Water

Water deeply once a week the first year. Water at the base, not the leaves.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall, with the base of the canes at soil level.

Feeding

Rose or balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring and again in early summer.

Pruning

Cut back by about a third in early spring as buds swell. No deadheading needed, though it tidies the plant.

Through the year

Leafs out in spring, blooms in waves June to frost, red hips possible in fall.

If something's off

Japanese beetles in midsummer. Some black spot in wet years, usually minor. Deer will browse roses.
