Light

Full sun. In shade it gets sparse and stops blooming.

Water

Water to establish, then only in dry spells. Overwatering rots it.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall, crown slightly high. Add grit to clay or plant on a slope or wall edge.

Feeding

Little to none. A pinch of lime helps in very acidic soil.

Pruning

Shear spent flowers back to the foliage after bloom to tidy and push rebloom.

Through the year

Evergreen mat most winters. Big bloom in May–June, lighter rebloom in late summer and fall.

If something's off

Crown rot in wet, heavy soil is the usual failure. Dianthus is mildly toxic to dogs and cats.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.
