Light

Full sun to part shade. At least four hours of sun for strong stems and color.

Water

Water weekly the first two summers. After that, in dry spells.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or fall, crown at soil level.

Feeding

A balanced slow-release feed in spring.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring, cutting back by up to a third to a strong framework.

Through the year

Leaves in spring. Flowers from late June, white to pink to red. Dried heads into winter.

If something's off

Bent stems after heavy rain mean it needs a firmer prune to thicker wood. Few flowers means too much shade. Hydrangeas are toxic to dogs and cats.

Plant it with friends.
