Light

Bright, indirect light. Direct afternoon sun scorches the leaves.

Water

Water when the top inch is dry, at the soil, not over the leaves. Cane begonias rot if kept soggy.

Pot and soil

A light, well-draining mix with perlite. Good airflow helps prevent mildew.

Feeding

Half-strength liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer.

Grooming

Pinch the tips to keep it bushy. Cut tall canes back in spring; they resprout from the base, and the cuttings root in water.

Through the year

Spring and summer: feed, pinch and give it good light. Fall and winter: water less, stop feeding and keep it away from cold drafts.

If something's off

White powder on the leaves is powdery mildew; improve airflow and keep the leaves dry. Leaf drop means too much water or a cold draft. Toxic to pets.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.
