Light

Morning sun and afternoon shade. Sasanquas take more sun than japonicas once established.

Water

Water weekly the first year, and in dry spells while buds form in late summer and fall.

Planting and soil

Plant in fall or spring in acidic, well-drained soil, with the top of the root ball slightly above grade. Don't bury the trunk.

Feeding

An azalea-camellia fertilizer after bloom in late winter or spring.

Pruning

Prune lightly right after flowering. Pruning later cuts off next year's buds.

Through the year

New growth in spring. Buds set in summer. Blooms October through December. Evergreen all winter.

If something's off

Tea scale shows as white fuzz under leaves; treat with horticultural oil. Yellow leaves usually mean alkaline soil. Camellias are non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.

Why we stock it: Fresh flowers in the garden when the rest of it has packed up for the year.
