Boxwood

Light

Sun to part shade. Shade from winter sun and wind reduces bronzing.

Water

Weekly the first summer. Moderately drought tolerant once established.

Planting and soil

Well-drained soil. Keep the root ball at grade and mulch, but not against the stems.

Feeding

Slow-release fertilizer in spring.

Pruning

Shear in late spring after new growth hardens, and again in midsummer if needed.

Through the year

Bright green new growth in spring. Bronze cast in cold winters.

If something's off

Root rot in poorly drained soil. Leafminers and blight can appear in humid regions. Toxic to pets.

The dependable small hedge.

A rounded boxwood with small, glossy green leaves and a dense habit that shears into hedges, globes and edging. It handles Southern heat better than English boxwood. In cold winters the leaves bronze, then green up again in spring.

Why we stock it: Clean edges and year-round green that put up with heat.
