Light

Morning sun and afternoon shade. Full sun only where summers are cool.

Water

Keep evenly moist; it wilts fast in heat. Water at the base, not the leaves.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall in soil with plenty of organic matter, crown at soil level.

Feeding

A balanced slow-release feed in spring. Aluminum sulfate for bluer flowers, garden lime for pinker.

Pruning

Deadhead only. Remove dead stems in spring once you see which buds leafed out.

Through the year

Leaves in spring. Flowers early to midsummer, with a light rebloom in fall.

If something's off

No flowers usually means pruning or a late frost killed the buds. Midday wilting can be heat, not thirst; check the soil first. Hydrangeas are toxic to dogs and cats.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.
