Alpine Catchfly

Light

Full sun. Where summers are hot, a little afternoon shade helps.

Water

Water while it settles in, then sparingly. Wet soil, especially in winter, kills it.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall in gritty, well-drained soil and mulch with gravel. A trough or shallow pot works well.

Feeding

None.

Pruning

Snip off the faded flower stems after bloom. That's the whole job.

Through the year

Leafy tufts from spring through fall. Blooms May into June.

If something's off

Rot in heavy or wet soil. It's short-lived, but it may self-sow into gravel.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.

A small plant for small places.

Low tufts of narrow leaves send up tight heads of rose-pink flowers in late spring. It comes from rocky mountain slopes in the far north, which tells you what it wants: sun, grit and sharp drainage.

Why we stock it: It fits where nothing else fits, and blooms like it belongs there.
