Office kit

The Office Survivors.

For fluorescent lights and long weekends.

Two snake plants for the desk that gets no light, one Boston fern for the shelf near the window. All three forgive a long weekend. The fern is the pet-safe one; keep the snakes where pets cannot nibble.

Dracaena trifasciata

Snake Plant

The office survivor. Thrives on neglect (really).

The one honest “thrives on neglect.” Low light, missed waterings, a desk next to the copier: it has seen worse. The only way to kill it is to love it too much with a watering can.

Nephrolepis exaltata

Boston Fern

Pet-safe. Porch-ready. Very 1970s, in a good way.

Your grandmother was right. Lush, arching fronds that soften a room or a covered porch. Humidity-loving, so it is happiest in a bathroom or a bright, steamy kitchen.
