Weeping Willow

Light

Full sun.

Water

Plenty. Weekly deep watering away from natural water; it never minds wet feet.

Planting and soil

Moist to wet soil, clay included. Pond banks and low spots are ideal.

Feeding

Not needed.

Pruning

Remove broken and crossing limbs in late winter. Raise the canopy if you want to walk under it.

Through the year

Catkins and new leaves in early spring. Yellow fall color, late. Golden-green twigs in winter.

If something's off

Brittle wood breaks in storms, so keep it away from roofs and cars. Usually lives 30–50 years. Aphids, cankers and caterpillars are common.

Every pond's favorite tree.

Long, pale green branches sweep to the ground and move with every breeze. It grows fast, often 3 ft a year, into a broad, rounded tree. Leaves come out early in spring and hold late into fall.

Why we stock it: The fastest way to make a wet corner look intentional.
