Japanese Spirea

Light

Full sun for the best color; part sun turns it greener.

Water

Water weekly the first summer. Moderate after that.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil.

Feeding

A light spring feeding is plenty.

Pruning

Cut back by a third in late winter. Shear after the first bloom to trigger new red growth.

Through the year

Red new growth in spring. Purple-pink flowers in late spring. Yellow and orange all summer. Bare in winter.

If something's off

Scorch in hot afternoon sun in the South; give it a bit of shade there. Aphids are occasional and harmless.

Color without waiting for flowers.

New leaves come out candy-apple red, turn pineapple yellow, and keep pushing orange tips all season. Small purple-pink flowers show up in late spring, which is almost beside the point.

Why we stock it: A small shrub that looks like it's in bloom for six months.
