Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall with the graft or crown at soil level.

Feeding

A rose or balanced slow-release feed in spring.

Pruning

Cut back by a third in early spring. Remove dead or crossing canes anytime.

Through the year

Leaves out in spring. Flowers in waves from May to frost. Hips in fall.

If something's off

Rose rosette disease (witches'-broom, red, overly thorny shoots) has no cure; remove the plant. Japanese beetles in midsummer. Deer will eat it. Roses are non-toxic to pets, but mind the thorns.
