Light

Part shade is ideal. Takes full sun with steady moisture, and full shade with a little less color.

Water

Keep evenly moist the first season. Established plants handle short dry spells.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or fall, crown at soil level, in soil with some organic matter.

Feeding

A little compost in spring.

Pruning

It is semi-evergreen. In early spring, rake out brown leaves with your fingers or trim the whole clump to a few inches if it looks rough.

Through the year

Holds its leaves through mild winters. Fresh growth in spring; looks good from April through December.

If something's off

Leaf tips brown in hot, dry sun. Winter wind can scorch it in zone 5; give it a sheltered spot there.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.
