Light

Full sun is best; light shade is fine.

Water

Weekly the first year. Established palms are drought tolerant.

Planting and soil

Spring or early summer, at the same depth as the pot. Never bury the trunk.

Feeding

Palm fertilizer with magnesium and potassium in spring and summer.

Pruning

Remove only fully brown fronds. Cutting green fronds weakens the palm.

Through the year

Evergreen. Cream flowers in late spring; orange fruit in summer. Protect young palms in hard freezes.

If something's off

Yellowing older fronds usually means potassium or magnesium deficiency; use palm fertilizer. Spiny frond stems: wear gloves.

The palm for cooler gardens.

Arching, blue-green fronds on a thick, stubby trunk, and hardy to about 15°F once established. It grows slowly into a broad, tropical-looking specimen. The orange fruit is edible and makes a good jelly, hence its other name, jelly palm.

Why we stock it: A real palm look in places where most palms would die the first winter.
