Light

Morning sun, afternoon shade. Full shade cuts flowering.

Water

Keep evenly moist; water deeply in dry weather. Wilting at midday in heat is normal if it recovers by evening.

Planting and soil

Spring or fall, in soil with compost, at the same depth as the pot. Mulch to hold moisture.

Feeding

Light shrub fertilizer in spring. Aluminum sulfate for bluer flowers; garden lime for pinker.

Pruning

It blooms on old wood. Prune right after flowering, if at all. Remove dead stems in spring.

Through the year

Leaves in spring. Lacecaps from early summer into fall. Burgundy fall leaves.

If something's off

Leaf spot in wet, crowded sites: improve air flow. No flowers usually means late pruning or too much shade.

A smaller, tougher hydrangea.

A compact mountain hydrangea with lacecap flowers, pink in neutral soil and blue-violet in acidic soil. Its buds handle late spring frost better than bigleaf types, so it actually blooms. Leaves often turn burgundy in fall.

Why we stock it: Hydrangea flowers in a small space, with fewer bloomless years.
