Asian Pear

Light

Full sun, six to eight hours.

Water

Weekly the first two summers. Established trees handle dry spells but fruit better with a deep soak.

Planting and soil

Spring or fall, graft union above the soil.

Feeding

Light. Balanced fertilizer in early spring; too much nitrogen invites fire blight.

Pruning

Late winter, to a central leader with well-spaced scaffold branches. Thin fruit to one per cluster in late spring for full-size pears.

Through the year

White bloom in early spring. Thin fruit in late spring. Harvest mid to late August.

If something's off

Fire blight: cut out blackened shoots well below the damage and sterilize the pruners. Birds like ripe fruit.

Often called the best-tasting Asian pear.

Large, round, golden-bronze fruit with crisp, very juicy, sweet flesh and a little tartness. Asian pears ripen on the tree, so you pick them ready to eat, in mid to late August. They store for a couple of months.

Why we stock it: Pear flavor with apple crunch, ripe straight off the branch.
