Light

Full sun outdoors; the brightest window indoors.

Water

Deeply when the top inch is dry. Never let a pot sit in water.

Planting and soil

Spring. Root flare at or slightly above the soil. Citrus or cactus mix in pots.

Feeding

Citrus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks from spring through summer.

Pruning

Light shaping after harvest. Remove all-green shoots and anything below the graft.

Through the year

Blooms in spring and in flushes after. Fruit year-round in mild climates. Bring pots in before frost.

If something's off

Variegated citrus grows slower and is a little less vigorous. Scale and mealybugs indoors: horticultural oil.

A lemon with stripes.

Green-and-cream variegated leaves, and young fruit striped green and yellow like tiny watermelons. The stripes fade as the lemons ripen; the flesh is pale pink and properly tart. It fruits on its own, often several times a year.

Why we stock it: The best-looking citrus you can grow, and the lemons are real.
