Dwarf Sour Cherry

Light

Full sun, six hours or more.

Water

Water weekly the first two summers. Then only in dry spells, and steadily while fruit is forming.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or fall at the depth it grew in the pot. Average soil is fine; wet ground is not.

Feeding

Compost or a balanced fruit fertilizer in early spring.

Pruning

Thin out old, crowded stems at the base in late winter to keep light in the center.

Through the year

White flowers in spring, fruit colors and ripens mid to late summer. Bare winter shrub.

If something's off

Birds are the main threat; net early. Pits, leaves and stems are toxic to pets.

Bred for brutal winters.

Bush-sized cherries from a Canadian breeding program, hardy to zone 2. The fruit is sweeter than a pie cherry but keeps the tartness that makes good jam. Juliet ripens first; Romeo follows with darker fruit.

Why we stock it: Real homegrown cherries where sweet cherries would never survive, picked without a ladder.
