Boston Ivy

Light

Sun to full shade. Fall color is best in sun.

Water

Water weekly the first season. After that it is drought tolerant.

Planting and soil

Spring or fall, 12–18 in. from the wall. Lean the stems toward it; they'll grab on once new growth starts.

Feeding

None.

Pruning

Cut back from windows, vents, gutters and roof edges in late winter and again midsummer.

Through the year

Leaves out in spring. Green all summer. Red to purple in October. Bare in winter, leaving a net of stems.

If something's off

Holdfasts can stain paint and loosen weak mortar; use it on sound masonry. The berries and leaves are toxic to pets.

Why we stock it: The fastest way to make an ugly wall look like it was always meant to be there.
