Bigleaf Hydrangea

Light

Morning sun, afternoon shade.

Water

Keep it evenly moist; more in heat. Wilting at midday that recovers by evening is normal.

Planting and soil

Spring or fall. Rich, well-drained soil. Lime or neutral soil keeps it red; acidic soil turns it purple.

Feeding

Slow-release fertilizer in spring.

Pruning

Remove dead stems and spent flowers in spring once buds show. Skip the fall haircut.

Through the year

Flowers from June, with more through fall. Dried heads can stay over winter.

If something's off

Leaf spot in humid weather; water at the base. Toxic to pets.

Cherry-red, and it reblooms.

Mophead flowers open cherry-red and deepen to wine as they age. It blooms on old and new wood, so a late frost or a bad pruning job doesn't cost you the summer. At two to three feet, it fits a pot by the door.

Why we stock it: Red mopheads all summer from a shrub small enough for a container.
