Aromatic Aster

Light

Full sun. In shade it opens up and leans.

Water

Water weekly the first summer. After that it handles heat and drought.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall in average to lean, well-drained soil.

Feeding

None. Feeding makes it sprawl.

Pruning

Optional pinch by a third in early June. Leave stems standing over winter and cut back in early spring.

Through the year

Green, rounded clump all summer. Blooms October into November, often past the first light frosts. Seed heads into winter.

If something's off

Rot in heavy, wet soil. If it splits open in the middle, divide it in spring.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.

Late, blue and worth it.

A selection of a native aromatic aster with a rounded habit and masses of blue-violet daisies in late fall, after most of the garden has packed it in. Brush the leaves and you get a clean, sweet scent.

Why we stock it: It blooms when nothing else will, and the bees know it.
