The story

The native hydrangea with a fall act.

Big white flower cones in early summer that age to deep rose, then oak-shaped leaves that turn burgundy in fall and peeling cinnamon bark in winter. 'Ruby Slippers' stays compact, so it fits by the steps instead of swallowing them.

Light

Morning sun, afternoon shade. Handles more shade than most flowering shrubs.

Water

Water weekly the first two summers. Established plants handle short dry spells better than other hydrangeas.

Planting

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil with compost worked in. It hates soggy ground.

The hydrangea for people who want something besides a mophead.
