Eastern Redbud

Light

Full sun to part shade. Afternoon shade in hot zones keeps the leaves a deeper purple.

Water

Deep soak weekly for the first two summers, then during droughts.

Planting and soil

Plant young in spring or fall; redbuds dislike being moved once settled. Well-drained soil, not soggy.

Feeding

None needed.

Pruning

Late winter: remove dead, crossing or low branches. Keep pruning light.

Through the year

Magenta flowers straight off bare branches in early spring, then heart-shaped burgundy leaves all summer.

If something's off

Sunken, dark patches on branches are canker: prune them out in dry weather. Faded leaves in summer mean too much hot sun.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.

Then purple hearts all summer.

Magenta flowers bloom straight off the bare branches in early spring, then heart-shaped leaves come in deep burgundy-purple. Small enough for a front yard, with a shape that looks good from the street.
